Following the Examples of the Great Lamas : When we hear the stories of great lamas, we are filled with inspiration. But their stories provide us with lessons on how we should lead our lives. Over four weeks we will learn about the life stories of Marpa the Translator, Milarepa, the First Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa, and Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche and discuss how we can apply the lessons we learn from their life stories to our own.
Keeping Vows and Precepts in the Modern Day : When we start practicing Buddhism, we often find ourselves taking many vows, such as refuge vows, the five precepts, bodhisattva vows, and sojong vows. But often we take the vows without really knowing what we are committing ourselves to. In these four sessions, we will cover the different types of vows and explain what their precepts are, how long we are committing ourselves to them for, what it means to break the vows, and how we can restore them if we do break them. We will also discuss how to practice the vows within the context of a busy urban life.
