Namo Buddha Medical Clinic

The Tamang people inhabit the area surrounding Namo Buddha. They are extremely poor and support themselves through farming. The most basic health assistance is a four-hour walk from Namo Buddha. They lack the conveniences of modern technology, infrastructure and hospitals. Medical conditions in some rural and remote regions have failed to keep pace.
Based on the Buddha's teaching of loving kindness and compassion, Namo Buddha Medical Clinic was established in April 1995 by Ven.Thrangu Rinpoche and its mission is committed to provide proper medical care for patients in remote regions, regardless of religious, ethnic or political background, as well as the monks attending school and managing the Namo Buddha Monastery
Medical Relief for the Poor
The clinic is opened Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. Jamyang Dorje, the monk in charge and some other monks were trained in medical care and first aid. In addition, volunteer doctors and somtimes dentists (Himalayan Dental Relief) also help. Thousands of poor people have been treated who do not have the mean to even travel to the nearest town for treatment.
Eye Center
With the generous support of Tilganga Eye Center, the outreach eye camp has been launched and provided free treatment to the poor mountain people in surrounding Himalayan region.
Tilganga Eye Center holds eyes screening days at the Namo Buddha Medical Clinic to determine who are in need of cataract surgery. Common eye problems are treated at the clinic, but patients or the elderly with low vision and blindness are referred to the nearest eye hospital. At the same time, with the purpose to disease prevention, a group of the Ophthalmic Assistants are involved in imparting eye health education to that community.
The clinic is now funded by donation from Himalayan Medical Foundation and other sponsor.
Future
Today, Namo Buddha Medical Clinic is renowned for offering personal, quality care to the local villagers and across Namo Buddha. As the population is growing annually, there are increasing requirements for health services, the current campus is undersized and no longer meets the needs of the community. Namo Buddha needs larger modern facilities to meet capacity and accommodate new medical technologies.
The new two-story clinic will be located at Namo Buddha, replacing an old medical clinic owned by the Namo Buddha Monastry. The existing facility will remain open until the new clinic is completed in order to provide uninterrupted care to the community.
The new complex will be 720 square feet. That includes two examination rooms providing for privacy, running water in each examining room, toilets and a room for storage. Construction work on the new project is in progress.
